Unable to generate RSOP data

I use the Microsoft RSOP tool frequently and today I encountered a strange problem.



The error was:

• The RSOP snap-in was unable to generate the RSOP data due to the error listed below. Details: Generic failure

I know for sure that there is something wrong with the server's WMI as my monitoring tool is unable to collect some data. Knowing that RSOP requires WMI to function, restarting the WMI service is the way to go.

You can open services.msc to restart the Windows Management Instrumentation service or use command prompt:

sc restart winmgmt

Alternatively, rebooting the server should also fix this issue.
